The 1998 CIO-100 winners have excelled in value-chain management, the theme of this year's awards program. The value chain is the sequence of activities a company carries out to create products/services and generate revenue. Managing the value chain involves building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, customers, vendors, outsourcers, partners and competitors. The CIO-100 winners have flourished in forging solid bonds with these business constituents.
"I have been a great fan of CIO magazine since its very first issue. It is therefore a special honor to have Ingram Micro designated as one of 1998's CIO-100 award winners," said David M. Carlson, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Ingram Micro Inc. "Given our corporate vision of exceeding our customers' expectations, every day, it is especially gratifying to get this award in the context of CIO's emphasis on value-chain management. As the leader in the computer wholesale distribution industry, we continually strive to fulfill that vision."
Selection of winners was based on a ballot vote; members of the CIO editorial staff examined Fortune's top 700 U.S.-based companies and selected 400 candidates equally divided among four industries: finance, retail, manufacturing and service/other. A team of academicians, consultants and analysts reviewed the candidates. The experts were allowed to nominate additional CIO-100 candidates, provided the recommended companies were within Fortune's top 1000. One hundred companies emerged as CIO-100 winners.
