INGRAM MICRO TO DISTRIBUTE
SUN'S ULTRA ENTERPRISE 450 SERVER AND SOLUTION
SUITES
Introduction is Part of Sun's "Channeling the
Workgroup" Initiative
SANTA ANA, Calif., Aug. 19, 1997
Ingram Micro Inc., the world's leading wholesale
distributor of technology products and services,
announced it will make available to its domestic
authorized resellers the new Sun Microsystems, Inc.
Ultra Enterprise 450 server and new Solution
Suites, in which Sun has paired the new server with
key software applications. Through the Solution
Suites, Ingram Micro will offer complete solutions
for Internet and messaging, respectively, by
teaming software from Ingram Micro suppliers
Netscape Communications and Lotus with Sun's new
server.
New Sun Ultra
Enterprise 450 Server
According to Mary Galvin, vice president of VAR
Sales for Ingram Micro, "The Ultra Enterprise 450
server offers a new opportunity for our Sun
resellers that want to service the PC market. The
Ultra Enterprise 450 is unique because, while it is
designed to provide the scalability and reliability
of enterprise systems, it is also designed to be
easy to use and to be cost competitive with PC
servers.
"Clearly, we are excited to bring the Ultra
Enterprise 450 server to our customers -- and the
Solution Suites designed by Sun make it easy for
resellers to target strategic markets. We believe
our resellers will find the new server and
solutions easy to sell, install and support," she
said.
According to Dick Bowman, vice president, US
Reseller Channel, Sun Microsystems, "We are excited
to join with Ingram Micro to bring the Ultra
Enterprise 450 server and Solution Series to the
channel. Sun remains committed to providing
high-quality products and solutions to Sun
authorized resellers, and will continue to work
with Ingram Micro to educate and train resellers on
ways to penetrate the PC market."
Solution
Suites
The Solution Suites are packaged like recipe books,
and specify hardware, software and components
resellers can put together to configure solutions
for a wide range of markets.
Added Galvin, "The Solution Suites help
resellers take the guesswork out of designing a
complete solution for their customers. Ingram Micro
is fully supportive of Sun's initiative to provide
complete solutions for today's hottest markets. We
will help our Sun resellers take advantage of these
solutions by providing the complete array of
recipes as well as complete solutions for Internet
and messaging."
The software for these solutions comes from two
long-standing Ingram Micro suppliers, Netscape
Communications and Lotus.
For the Internet solution, Sun has selected
Netscape SuiteSpot software to provide a
cost-effective and easy-to-use solution for Web,
messaging and crossware application needs, when
paired with the Ultra Enterprise 450 server. The
solution is designed to assist work groups that use
the Internet and e-mail. SuiteSpot provides
advanced functionality in messaging, group
discussion, calendaring, Web publishing and content
management for Web-based database applications.
Said John Hahn, Netscape's vice president of
sales programs, "We are extremely pleased that
Netscape software is part of Sun's Solution Suite
available through Ingram Micro. Netscape is
committed to creating opportunities for resellers
to take advantage of the tremendous growing market
share position Netscape's SuiteSpot is garnering in
the Web application and messaging market. We look
forward to continue working with Ingram Micro to
help Sun resellers capitalize on the growing
Internet market."
For the messaging solution, Sun has teamed Lotus
Domino Mail and Lotus Web Application with the
Ultra Enterprise 450 server. The Lotus Domino Mail
solution supports Web access, collaborative
workspaces, integrated calendaring and scheduling,
e-mail, news groups and real-time discussions. The
Lotus Web Application solution provides scalability
and reliability, supports the widest range of
messaging and groupware clients, and allows the
creation and hosting of Internet and intranet
sites.
According to Joe McLaughlin, Lotus' vice
president, business partner and channel sales,
"Lotus is pleased to partner with Ingram Micro to
reach and serve Sun resellers looking to deliver
complete messaging solutions. In today's messaging
market, Ingram Micro, Lotus and Sun make a great
team. Lotus provides the software needed to offer a
quality messaging solution, Sun provides the new
Ultra Enterprise 450 server, and Ingram Micro
delivers a complete solution to its extensive base
of reseller customers."
